Can You Be Assertive?

If you want to work in sales, you must be assertive. If you think you’re assertive now, think again, because sales assertion is a whole new ball game. When working in sales, you can’t have any reservations about tactfully promoting your product or service and making your objectives extremely clear from the start of the phone call or meeting. This requires a certain degree of tenacity, hard work, and dedication to be able to achieve all your goals. A lot of people are not cut out for this line of work, but for those who are, sales could be the perfect calling card for you.

How Are You with Following Up?

Most sales victories are not a result of the initial call; rather, they’re a result of countless follow-up calls and e-mails. Some of the biggest and most successful sales deals have been closed after ten to fifty follow-up e-mails, so you need to remember not to give up and to keep pursuing your goal until you get a hard “yes” or a hard “no.” Many people are uncomfortable with this aspect of sales as they feel they are bothering the other party, or they struggle with “rejection.” In reality, a good salesperson knows that the people they’re calling or e-mailing probably just got busy and forgot to respond. If you can keep following up until you get an answer, you’re probably in good shape to work in sales.

Can You Feign Passion?

Part of being a good salesperson is being able to feign passion and excitement for whatever you’re selling. Let’s face it: some things (like insurance or tech support) are less exciting to sell than something like a sponsorship package or a new sailboat. Part of being a good salesperson is being able to sell whatever you have been tasked with and to show excitement and enthusiasm for that product. Excitement is infectious, so if you can do this, you are much more likely to meet your sales goals at the end of the month.
