As an employer, you will inevitably be handed a notice of resignation from a respected employee. While this can be a shock, you can often get them to think twice about leaving by providing a counter offer. However, this isn’t always the right move depending on your situation. Here’s how you can assess whether or not to provide a counter offer.

Can You Afford To?

One of the biggest factors to consider is whether or not you can afford to provide a counter offer. Often, you will need to offer the departing employee a significant amount more than what you were previously paying him or her. If you can afford it, great. If you can’t, you might need to look into hiring a new employee who is comfortable working with the established salary.

Assess Whether or Not the Employee Provides Value.

Even if the employee is a hard worker and gets along great with the other employees, you need to assess whether he or she provides value to the company. Have you thought about a rebrand that his or her role no longer fits? This would be the time to take a good look at the value of his/her position in conjunction with the company’s future and make that decision.

See if the Current Role is a Good Fit.

If the employee is no longer happy with his or her duties, you could assess whether or not the current role is a good fit before extending a counter-offer. It may turn out that you need to extend a counter-offer for a higher position or a position in a different department rather than just a compensation increase.

You also need to assess whether or not the company would benefit from keeping the employee onboard. It may be that you need an employee with fresh ideas or greater speed that the current employee is no longer providing you. If this is the case, it’s probably best not to extend the counter-offer.
