How to Ask For a Raise

December 23rd, 2014

As the year comes to a close, you might feel like you deserve a raise, especially if you have been working at the same job for a while. Even when it’s perfectly appropriate to ask for a raise, however, you have to go about doing it in the right way. Here are some guidelines:

Arrange Time to Meet With Your Supervisor.

If you want to ask for a raise, you will need to do so respectfully and responsibly. The best way to do this is to arrange a meeting with your supervisor. This will let him or her know that you have something you need to discuss. This will also set the tone for a respectful and professional meeting where you can feel free to express your needs.

State Your Case about Your Workplace Progress and Successes.

Once you are meeting with your supervisor, start off by talking about your past workplace successes and any progress you have made since starting at the company. Try to paint a picture for your supervisor by providing specific examples and successes you would like to draw attention to.

Explain Any Additional Responsibilities You Would Like to Take.

After you have stated your case about your workplace progress and successes, use this time to explain any additional responsibilities you would like to undertake. If you have been thinking about ways to improve your specific position or department, bring this up to your supervisor. Your supervisor will see that you take your job very seriously and are always thinking about how to improve whenever possible.

Ask For a Raise.

After you have explained any additional responsibilities you would like to take, it’s now time to ask your supervisor for a raise. Hopefully, your supervisor will easily agree and take into consideration your past job performance and future hopes for your responsibilities. If all goes well, your supervisor will present forth a new proposed salary for you. Even if the raise isn’t as big as you would have hoped, always accept it and thank your supervisor for the opportunity.

If you follow these above steps, you will be able to easily ask for a raise. If you are currently looking for a job in which you can grow and advance, contact Olympic Staffing.
